BECE vs WASSCE: What's the Difference?

BECE and WASSCE both get shortened to "the exam" in everyday conversation, which is exactly why students and parents mix them up. They sit at opposite ends of secondary education and do very different jobs.

BECE — the exit exam for Junior High School

The Basic Education Certificate Examination is taken at the end of Junior High School (JHS 3 / Basic 9), covering Ghana's standards-based basic school curriculum. Its main job is placement: BECE results determine which Senior High School — and which programme within it — a student is admitted to.

WASSCE — the exit exam for Senior High School

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is taken at the end of Senior High School (SHS 3) and is set and marked by WAEC, the West African Examinations Council, across Ghana, Nigeria and several neighbouring countries. WASSCE results are what universities, polytechnics and employers actually look at — it's the qualification, not a placement step.

Key differences at a glance

  • Stage: BECE ends Junior High School; WASSCE ends Senior High School.
  • Purpose: BECE places students into an SHS programme; WASSCE is the qualification tertiary institutions admit on.
  • Administered by: BECE by Ghana's own examination body; WASSCE by WAEC, regionally across West Africa.
  • Subject structure: BECE is broad and largely compulsory across core basic-school subjects; WASSCE compulsory load is just Mathematics and English, with the rest chosen as electives in an academic track.

How to prepare for each

BECE revision has to spread across every core subject on the standards-based curriculum, since there's no picking and choosing. WASSCE revision is narrower but deeper — once a student has settled on their elective track (general science, business, general arts, home economics, visual arts and so on), preparation can focus hard on that specific subject combination.

G3N tutors both stages on the actual curricula they're set against — the standards-based basic curriculum for BECE, and the NaCCA syllabus for WASSCE — with lessons, quizzes and revision summaries that work offline.
